Janmashtami: "Celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna"

Updated: May 20, 2023

Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most popular festival in India. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (August-September).

The festival is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm across India and among the Hindu community around the world. On this day, devotees fast, pray, sing devotional songs, and perform puja (worship) of Lord Krishna. The festival is especially popular in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and in Vrindavan, where he spent his childhood.

One of the main rituals of Janmashtami is the Dahi Handi, where a group of people form a human pyramid to reach and break an earthen pot filled with curd that is hung high up in the air. This ritual represents the playful nature of Lord Krishna, who was known for his mischievous antics as a child.

Janmashtami is a time for joy and celebration, and it is believed that observing this festival with devotion brings blessings and prosperity to one's life.
