Ganesh Chaturthi: "The Significance of Lord Ganesha in Hindu Mythology".

Updated: May 20, 2023

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular festival in India. It is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the God of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi and is celebrated on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (usually falls between August and September).

The festival is celebrated for 10 days, with the grandest celebrations taking place in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. People decorate their homes and pandals (temporary structures) with colorful lights and flowers, and bring clay idols of Lord Ganesha to their homes and pandals. The idols are worshipped with great devotion and offerings of sweets, fruits, and flowers are made to seek his blessings.

On the tenth day of the festival, the idols are taken in grand processions to be immersed in water bodies such as rivers, lakes, or the sea. This is known as visarjan, symbolizing the farewell to Lord Ganesha, who is believed to return to his heavenly.
